Measure the outcome, not the traffic
A traffic chart that goes up is not a result. A traffic chart that goes up while monthly donors stay flat is a warning. Measurement should answer one question for your board: is our search visibility producing mission outcomes?
What we set up
- Outcome definitions. Before touching a tag, we agree on what counts: a completed donation, a recurring gift, a volunteer application, a program referral, a resource download, a newsletter sign-up.
- GA4, configured properly. Key events, conversion values, internal and referral exclusions, cross-domain handoff to your donation platform, and channel groupings that reflect how people actually reach you.
- Search Console and rank tracking. Non-brand impressions and clicks separated from brand, because brand traffic flatters every report.
- AI visibility tracking. Citation counts in AI answers and featured snippet ownership for your priority questions, tracked over time next to the classic metrics.
- Reporting people read. One page a month: what changed, what it produced, what we are doing next. Plus a live dashboard for anyone who wants to dig.
Privacy as a default
Your audiences include donors, and often people accessing sensitive services. We configure consent-aware, minimal-collection tracking, keep third-party pixels out unless a campaign requires them, and document what is collected so you can answer a privacy question without a scramble.
Frequently asked questions
Our GA4 is a mess. Can it be fixed or do we start over?
Usually fixed. Most nonprofit GA4 properties are not broken so much as never configured: no key events defined, internal traffic unfiltered, donation platforms landing in a separate property, and referral exclusions missing so every gift looks like it came from the payment processor. That is a few days of work, not a rebuild.
How do you track donations when giving happens on another platform?
We stitch the handoff. Depending on your platform - CanadaHelps, Zeffy, Donorbox, Raisely, Stripe - that means cross-domain configuration, referral exclusions, and passing a transaction value back so the gift is attributed to the campaign or search query that produced it.
Can we measure this without invasive tracking?
Yes, and we prefer it. Server-side and cookieless configurations, consent-mode defaults that respect a decline, no third-party ad pixels unless you are actively running ads, and data retention set deliberately. Nonprofits hold sensitive audiences and should behave accordingly.
